If you are a business person, it is very important to 'sell' your product with positive sounding words and the facts about what makes it a good thing. Garage doors are no exception! And just like advertising for garage doors, advertising for yourself requires a bit of finesse- you want to tell people your strengths, but you don't want to come off as self-important or even delusional.
For example, here is part of an application questionnaire I received when someone applied to this job. I am an empathetic person: inclined towards perspective-taking and often
able to identify the emotional subtext of conversations. For example,
when I'm babysitting and a conflict arises between siblings, I am able
to put myself in their place and find the root of the problem, and
express it to them.
Or in dealings with my peers, I am often able to empathize with the part
of the problem that they are not willing to openly address. When my
roommate Allison tells me about her boyfriend troubles, she doesn't
explicitly SAY that she feels controlled by him, but I will still ask
her, "Allison, do you think he's being too clingy, or too pushy? Like,
when was the last time you went out without him?" and watching the
relief blossom across her face when I correctly gague the situation is
worth taking the risk of being wrong. (Also, even when I read a
situation wrong I find people love to contradict incorrect assumptions,
and directly address the problem that way.) I'm also pretty good as
phrasing questions so that the person knows I'm not being judgmental,
just curious.
Also, I'm not a naturally self-conscious person. I am very secure in my
own emotional stability and my own likableness. So in a helping
situation, I am able to devote my efforts entirely towards learning
about and helping the other person, instead of reserving effort for
making sure they like me and I seem cool. In addition, this means that I
don't feel flustered by "awkward pauses". I'm very patient in
conversation and in general.
Do you think this answer does the job, or does it sound self-important?
