Garage use #22
Remember in That 70's Show, how Eric Foreman had the coolest basement to hang out in with all of his friends? Or how about Homer's garage in The Simpsons?
You can make your garage into a cool den slash hang out spot relatively easily with a little help from your friends. (Especially the ones who plan on taking advantage of your new second living room!) It can be a relaxed space for hanging out, watching TV, smoking hookah, playing games, whatever. Especially if you have one of those nice living rooms with really fancy furniture and an expensive carpet, you'll be happy you made more space for a hang out space.
After doing all of the cleaning outlined in the last post (don't forget to put in a carpet, this time!) you might want to invest in a garage door with windows, as any room without natural light is likely to be quite drab and depressing. You then will definitely need secondary lighting- some cheap pentapus lamps should do the trick, or nice table lamps. Throw in a rug, a couch, a comfy chair, and a coffee table and you've got your start.
Then, you might want to include a TV, a boom box, video games, board games, books, or even a pinball machine! I have a friend with an old-school Pacman machine in his garage and that's basically all we did during summers as teenagers. A few wall hangings, photos, cool posters and the like will help the room feel more like a room and less like a garage. Even a large qui.lt tacked to the wall can really add character and a good feeling in the space.
This will all be labor intensive, so if you're planning to host a cool beer-and-poker firday night in your new room, don't forget to enlist the help of your friends!
