A
lot of garage door installation people and garage door services companies do
not want to discuss the removal of a garage door with customers. They strongly
admonish customers not to attempt to remove doors themselves, and to call in a
professional.

While
this is probably generally good advice, many groups don’t even want to give the
basic idea. The truth is, you do risk your safety if you’re an untrained person
trying to get rid fo a door, but you deserve to now what the process is like,
so you know if you’re getting taken advantage of when you call in the
professionals.

We
have talked a lot about the mechanics of garage door repair and replacement on
this blog- if you search past entries, you’ll see lots of explanations of this
process.

But
the general idea is that:

1.
you need more than one person

2.
disconnect the garage door opener first!

3.
disconnect wires and bolts.

4.
raise the door, and clamp down the opener track to make sure it stays this way.

5.
disconnect springs and cables WITH CAUTION. This is the most dangerous stage.

6.
remove hinges on each panel one by one.
