The only way you can fully optimize your house for fuel/energy efficiency is to be proactive about it. You have to do your part, and a huge portion of that is choosing a good model of a garage door.

A garage door that supports the principle of green building will:

1. Use insulated, low-maintenance steel. It may also include composite. You can make sure you're getting a door that is qualified for energy efficiency by a manufacturer. If you feel you MUST have a wood garage door, make sure you choose one from a company that uses naturally fallen wood instead of harvested/logged wood.

2. Buy from and help support those manufacturers who are good about using recycled materials instead of new ones. Review company's literature for how environmentally conscious they are. See if their distribution, harvesting of materials, and manufacturing processes are sustainable.

3. If you live in a place with high winds and severe storms, make sure to get a garage door that meets federal criteria for being safe during hurricane-force winds. Keeping your home intact during a storm is more sustainable than going for a door that might use better materials but won't protect your home.
