If you have a steel garage door and/or steel hardware, there are several things you can do to keep your machine in tip-top shape.

Firstly, it's a good idea to oil your torsion garage door springs every six months. You can simply use a light motor oil, drizzling it on and wiping it with a scrap of cloth. This will keep your garage door operating more quietly. Extension springs should not, however, be oiled.

You should also put some lubrication in the curving segments in the tracks, as they are the parts that experience the most day-to-day stress. Be sure not to use grease, as it may clog the tracks and lead to problems.

On occasion o when it becomes apparently necessary, wash the outside of your door with sudsy water to keep it clean and prevent corrosion.

If you're re-doing your home or are simply tired of white, you can paint your garage door as well. You should always wash down the door before doing this, however. Be sure to start with a layer of primer- many are specifically designed to protect the kind of galvanized steel your door is made out of. And finish off with a protective, water-resistant top coat.
